# Fibre After 40: Are You Getting Enough, and Does Variety Matter?

## Your gut doesn't just need more fibre. It needs the right foundations.

When we talk about nutrition after 40, protein tends to get a lot of attention.

And rightly so.

But there's another nutritional foundation that's much easier to overlook:

**Fibre.**

Most of us associate fibre with keeping our digestive system regular. That's certainly part of the story, but fibre does much more than simply add bulk to our diet.

Different fibres behave differently in the digestive system. Some can be fermented by microorganisms living in the gut, while others have different physical and functional properties. Modern microbiome research has increasingly highlighted just how varied dietary fibres really are.

So perhaps after 40, we should be asking two questions:

**Am I getting enough fibre?**

And:

Am I getting enough variety?

## How much fibre do we actually need?

In Australia, the Adequate Intake for dietary fibre is:

### WOMEN: 25g per day

### MEN: 30g per day

Those recommendations remain the same throughout adulthood.

Twenty-five or thirty grams might not sound particularly difficult.

But fibre needs to accumulate across the day.

A little at breakfast.

Some at lunch.

Some at dinner.

Fruit.

Vegetables.

Wholegrains.

Legumes.

Nuts.

Seeds.

When those foods aren't appearing regularly, reaching your daily fibre target can become surprisingly difficult.

And quantity is only one part of the conversation.

## Fibre is about more than regularity

Dietary fibre includes plant-derived carbohydrates that aren't fully digested in the small intestine.

Some travel into the large intestine, where they can be fermented by microorganisms living in the gut.

That fermentation can produce compounds known as **short-chain fatty acids**, including acetate, propionate and butyrate.

But different fibres aren't necessarily fermented in the same way.

Their structure and physical properties can influence how they interact with the gut microbiota, and responses can vary considerably between individuals.

Which brings us to something I think deserves much more attention:

### Fibre diversity.

## Not all fibre is the same

We often talk about fibre as though it's one nutrient.

It isn't.

Dietary fibre describes a broad collection of compounds with different structures and properties.

You may already have heard of:

**Soluble fibre**

**Insoluble fibre**

**Resistant starch**

**Beta-glucans**

**Inulin**

**Fructooligosaccharides, or FOS**

**Psyllium**

**Guar fibre**

These fibres don't all behave identically in the digestive tract.

Different structures can influence fermentability and how fibres interact with different microorganisms in the gut.

That's why one of the principles behind our approach to gut nutrition is simple:

### Don't just think more fibre. Think more fibre variety.

## Your gut microbiota needs something to eat too

Your digestive tract is home to an enormous community of microorganisms collectively known as the **gut microbiota**.

And what you eat helps shape the environment in which they live.

Certain gut microorganisms have enzymes that allow them to break down carbohydrates we can't completely digest ourselves.

In other words, some of the fibre you eat becomes a substrate for microbial fermentation.

Research suggests that the type and structure of fibre can influence microbial fermentation and composition, although individual responses vary.

So your gut doesn't simply encounter:

*"fibre".*

It encounters a diverse collection of plant structures and compounds.

Variety matters.

## What does fibre diversity look like on your plate?

Thankfully, this doesn't need to become complicated.

Instead of trying to count individual types of fibre, think about **diversifying the plants you eat**.

Across a week, that might include:

Oats.

Barley.

Brown rice.

Wholegrain breads.

Lentils.

Chickpeas.

Beans.

Apples.

Pears.

Berries.

Bananas.

Leafy greens.

Broccoli.

Carrots.

Sweet potato.

Nuts.

Seeds.

Onions.

Garlic.

And plenty of other vegetables, fruits, wholegrains and legumes.

Whole plant foods also bring far more than isolated fibre. They provide vitamins, minerals and a complex plant-food matrix that purified fibre alone doesn't replicate.

You don't need a perfect diet.

You need enough opportunities for **variety to accumulate**.

## Resistant starch deserves a mention

One particularly interesting form of fibre is **resistant starch**.

As the name suggests, resistant starch resists digestion in the small intestine, allowing some of it to reach the large intestine where it can be fermented by gut bacteria.

Sources can include foods such as:

Legumes.

Wholegrains.

Green bananas.

And some cooked-and-cooled starchy foods.

Again, the point isn't to find one magical type of fibre.

It's almost the opposite.

Different fibres bring different properties.

And variety gives your digestive system and microbiota a broader nutritional foundation.

## Does more fibre automatically mean a better microbiome?

This is where we need some nuance.

It's tempting to reduce gut health to a simple equation:

**More fibre = more microbiome diversity = better health.**

The research isn't quite that simple.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of fibre interventions in healthy adults found that certain fibres can alter the abundance of particular bacterial groups and influence microbial metabolism, but the effects on overall microbiome diversity were not straightforward.

More recent reviews also emphasise that responses to fibre can differ between people, partly because our existing gut microbiota aren't identical.

That's why I'm cautious about claims that a particular food or supplement can somehow "fix" your microbiome.

A more useful goal is:

### Build better gut-health foundations.

And that's something we can actually act on.

## What if you want to understand your own gut health?

This is where the gut-health conversation is becoming particularly interesting.

Rather than relying entirely on general advice, it's now possible to look at selected markers associated with **gut and metabolic activity**.

The [**Zinzino Gut Health Test**](https://www.zinzino.com/2020923829/au/en-gb/explore/gut-health-test) is an at-home dried blood spot test designed to provide insight into the functional output of your gut bacteria and how that activity relates to selected metabolic markers.

Importantly, **this isn't a stool microbiome test** designed to tell you which bacterial species are living in your gut.

Instead, it measures three compounds connected with tryptophan metabolism:

**Indole-3-propionic acid, or IPA**

A metabolite produced by certain gut bacteria from dietary tryptophan.

**Tryptophan, or TRP**

An essential amino acid obtained through food and a starting material for several metabolic pathways.

**Kynurenine, or KYN**

A metabolite produced through another pathway of tryptophan metabolism.

The test also calculates ratios between these markers and brings the results together into a **Gut Health Index**, providing an overview of what Zinzino describes as your gut-immune-metabolic marker profile.

## Why is that useful?

Because gut health is personal.

Two people can eat similar diets and still have different microbiota and different responses to particular fibres. Research increasingly recognises this variability.

The Gut Health Test adds another layer of personalised information.

Rather than simply telling you to "eat more fibre", the results include diet and lifestyle guidance based on your markers, with particular attention to **fibre and polyphenols**.

For me, that fits beautifully with the Thrive Beyond 40 approach:

### TEST → UNDERSTAND → NOURISH → RETEST

Know your starting point.

Understand your results.

Build better food and lifestyle foundations.

Then measure again if you want to see how your profile has changed.

It's not about diagnosing what's "wrong" with your gut.

It's about having more information to make informed choices.

## Food first

Even with personalised testing, the foundation doesn't change.

### Start with food.

A fibre supplement shouldn't become permission to stop eating plants.

Whole foods provide far more than isolated fibre.

They bring vitamins.

Minerals.

Polyphenols.

Different fibre structures.

Different plant compounds.

And the pleasure and variety of actual food.

So the foundation remains:

### Eat a varied, predominantly whole-food diet with plenty of plants.

Then targeted fibre nutrition can sit alongside that foundation.

Not instead of it.

## Where targeted fibre nutrition can help

Real life isn't always perfect.

Some days contain a beautiful variety of vegetables, wholegrains, legumes, nuts and seeds.

Other days contain a rushed breakfast, lunch between meetings and whatever can be assembled for dinner.

That's where I see value in a **structured daily fibre routine**.

Not as a replacement for food.

But as another way to support your fibre foundations consistently.

And that's the thinking behind our [**Gut Foundations Program**](https://www.thrivebeyond40.au/gut-foundations-program).

## Why use more than one type of fibre?

At the centre of Gut Foundations is **ZinoBiotic+**, a plant-based fibre blend containing multiple sources of dietary fibre.

The principle behind using a blend is important.

Different fibres have different structures, physical properties and fermentation characteristics. Research continues to explore how these differences influence microbial activity and why responses can vary from person to person.

Rather than thinking:

*"What's the best fibre?"*

I think there's a better question:

### How can I build greater fibre variety into my everyday nutrition?

That's the philosophy behind Gut Foundations.

**More plants. More variety. Better consistency.**

## Build gradually

If your current diet is relatively low in fibre, suddenly increasing it dramatically overnight may not feel particularly comfortable.

Changes in fibre intake can sometimes initially mean changes in gas, bloating or bowel habits.

A gentler approach is more practical.

**Start gradually.**

Give your digestive system time to adapt.

**Drink enough water.**

Hydration becomes particularly important as fibre intake increases.

**Keep eating whole foods.**

Targeted fibre should complement your diet, not replace it.

**Add variety.**

Rotate the plants and fibre sources you eat.

**Be consistent.**

Gut-health foundations are built through what you do repeatedly, not occasionally.

## Gut health is bigger than a supplement

This is an important Thrive Beyond 40 principle.

### Gut health doesn't come in a tub.

Our digestive health and microbiota exist within the much bigger context of how we live.

Food.

Fibre.

Plant diversity.

Hydration.

Movement.

Sleep.

Stress.

Alcohol.

Medications.

Age.

And many other individual factors can play a role.

That's why we've called our program [**Gut Foundations**](https://www.thrivebeyond40.au/gut-foundations-program).

We're not promising to "hack" your microbiome.

We're helping you build stronger everyday nutritional foundations around it.

## Why does this matter after 40?

Because healthy ageing is bigger than what we can see from the outside.

We think about our heart.

Our brain.

Our muscles.

Our bones.

Our skin.

Our weight.

But our digestive system deserves a place in that conversation too.

Fibre has long been recognised as an important part of a healthy diet, while microbiome research is giving us a much more sophisticated understanding of the relationships between food, fibre, microbes and the compounds they produce.

And one of the simplest things we can do remains remarkably uncomplicated:

Feed ourselves well.

More plants.

More variety.

Enough fibre.

Enough water.

And consistent habits that can survive real life.

## Your gut doesn't need perfection

You don't need to count every gram of fibre forever.

You don't need to transform your diet overnight.

And you definitely don't need to turn every meal into a microbiome experiment.

Start somewhere simpler.

Add berries to breakfast.

Choose wholegrains more often.

Put lentils or beans into a meal.

Add another vegetable to dinner.

Snack on nuts.

Try different seeds.

Rotate the plants you buy.

And if personalised testing and targeted fibre nutrition fit your approach, use them to **build on those foundations**.

Because healthy ageing isn't about getting everything right.

It's about understanding more, making better choices and doing the things that matter consistently.

Understand your gut. Nourish it well. Build from there.

**Age Well. Live Well.**

## Ready to understand your gut better?

Feel better from the inside out.

The **Thrive Beyond 40 [Gut Foundations Program](https://www.thrivebeyond40.au/gut-foundations-program)** brings together food-first education, fibre diversity and targeted daily fibre nutrition to help you build stronger gut-health foundations.

And for those who want deeper personalised insight, the [**Gut Health Test**](https://www.zinzino.com/2020923829/au/en-gb/explore/gut-health-test) offers another way to understand selected gut and metabolic markers and make more informed nutrition and lifestyle choices.
