Healthspan vs Lifespan: What's the Difference?

Written by Lisa Ma | Aug 24, 2026, 11:00:00 PM

We all understand lifespan.

It's how long we live.

We all understand lifespan.

It's how long we live.

But increasingly, healthy-ageing conversations are asking another question:

How well will we live those years?

That's where the idea of healthspan comes in.

What is healthspan?

Healthspan generally refers to the period of life spent in good health and with good function.

WHO describes healthy ageing in terms of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age.

In everyday language, that means things like:

  • Being able to move.

  • Travel.

  • Think clearly.

  • Work if you choose.

  • Play with grandchildren.

  • Participate in your community.

  • Maintain independence.

  • Enjoy relationships.

  • Keep doing the things that make your life feel like yours.

Living longer isn't the whole goal

Modern medicine has helped people live longer.

That's extraordinary.

But simply adding years isn't necessarily what most of us mean when we say we want to age well.

We want those years to contain life.

This is why Thrive Beyond 40 talks so much about:

Age Well. Live Well.

What influences healthy ageing?

There is no single longevity hack.

Some factors are outside our control, including genetics and aspects of our environment.

But many everyday behaviours still matter.

Physical activity

WHO recommends regular physical activity and notes benefits across cardiovascular health, cognition, sleep, functional ability and bone health.

Nutrition

A varied, nutritious dietary pattern supports health throughout adulthood.

Strength

Maintaining physical capacity becomes increasingly valuable as we age.

Sleep

Adults are generally advised to regularly obtain at least seven hours of sleep, although individual needs vary.

Connection

Healthy ageing isn't solely biological. Relationships, purpose and participation matter too.

Preventative healthcare

Screening, health checks and appropriate professional advice remain fundamental.

Why start thinking about this at 40?

Because healthy ageing doesn't begin when you're old.

Many of the habits and health foundations that influence later life are built much earlier.

Your 40s can be a powerful point to ask:

What do I want my 50s to look like?

Then your 60s.

70s.

80s.

And what can you reasonably do now to give yourself a better chance of enjoying them?

This is what Thrive Beyond 40 is really about

Yes, we talk about nutrition.

Testing.

Gut health.

Collagen.

Brain health.

Strength.

Recovery.

But those things aren't the destination.

Life is.

The holiday you want to take.

The work you still want to do.

The people you want to be there for.

The experiences you haven't had yet.

The ordinary Tuesday when you simply feel well enough to go out and enjoy yourself.

That's healthspan in a much more meaningful sense.

Start where you are

You don't have to overhaul everything.

Become curious.

Understand more.

Move your body.

Build strength.

Eat well.

Prioritise sleep.

Stay connected.

Keep up with your healthcare.

And make changes you can actually sustain.

Because healthy ageing isn't about trying not to get older.

It's about investing in your ability to keep living well as you do.
