# Longevity Supplements: What’s Worth Paying Attention To?

## The longevity industry can sell you almost anything. The harder question is whether you actually need it.

NMN.

NAD+.

Resveratrol.

Creatine.

Collagen.

Omega-3.

Vitamin D.

Magnesium.

Protein powders.

Probiotics.

Greens powders.

The list keeps growing.

If you’re interested in healthy ageing, it doesn’t take long before your social media feed starts suggesting that longevity comes in a bottle.

Some supplements have well-established nutritional roles.

Some have promising research behind them.

Some are useful in particular circumstances.

Others are being marketed far ahead of the evidence.

And sometimes the most important question isn’t:

**“What should I take?”**

It’s:

### “What am I actually trying to achieve?”

Because living well for longer requires much more than an impressive supplement drawer.

## Longevity and healthspan aren’t the same thing

Before talking about supplements, it helps to define the goal.

**Lifespan** is how long you live.

**Healthspan** is the period of life you spend in relatively good health and function.

At Thrive Beyond 40, healthspan is where much of our attention sits.

Not simply:

How can I live longer?

But:

Can I remain strong?

Can I think clearly?

Can I move well?

Can I travel?

Can I maintain independence?

Can I keep doing meaningful work?

Can I participate in the life I've built?

### More years are valuable when you have the health to live them.

That changes how we think about “longevity supplements”.

## You cannot supplement your way around the foundations

Imagine taking an expensive longevity stack while:

Sleeping five hours a night.

Rarely exercising.

Losing muscle.

Smoking.

Drinking heavily.

Eating poorly.

Ignoring high blood pressure.

And spending most of the day sitting.

No supplement makes those foundations irrelevant.

The biggest healthy-ageing priorities remain remarkably familiar:

**Don't smoke.**

**Move regularly.**

**Build and maintain muscle.**

**Protect cardiovascular and metabolic health.**

**Eat well.**

**Sleep.**

**Maintain meaningful relationships.**

**Use preventive healthcare.**

### Supplements belong underneath those foundations, not above them.

That doesn't make supplements useless.

It gives them context.

## Start with a better question

Instead of:

**“What are the best supplements for longevity?”**

Try:

### “Is there something my body needs that I'm not adequately getting?”

That's a fundamentally different approach.

Perhaps a nutrient intake is inadequate.

Perhaps your diet excludes particular foods.

Perhaps your life stage changes your nutritional priorities.

Perhaps you've had a deficiency identified.

Perhaps you train heavily.

Perhaps you're trying to maintain muscle.

Perhaps testing provides useful information.

Perhaps your healthcare professional has recommended something for a specific reason.

### The reason should come before the product.

## Vitamin D: important, but more isn't better

Vitamin D has important roles in normal health, including bone and muscle function.

Our bodies can produce vitamin D following appropriate exposure to sunlight, and smaller amounts can come from food.

But vitamin D status varies.

Sun exposure.

Skin pigmentation.

Age.

Lifestyle.

Season.

Geography.

Clothing.

And other individual factors can all influence it.

For someone with low vitamin D status, supplementation may be appropriate.

That doesn't mean everybody should take enormous doses in pursuit of longevity.

### Correcting inadequacy is different from chasing excess.

If you're concerned about your vitamin D status, this is something that can be discussed with your GP and measured when clinically appropriate.

## Omega-3: understand your intake and your status

Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, have recognised physiological roles.

EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function at appropriate intakes.

DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function.

Oily fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring and trout can provide EPA and DHA.

So where does supplementation fit?

It depends.

How much oily fish do you eat?

Are you already supplementing?

What dose?

How consistently?

And what does your fatty-acid profile actually look like?

This is one area where I particularly like the principle:

### Test rather than guess.

Our **Balance Program** uses fatty-acid testing to establish a measurable starting point before targeted nutritional support and retesting.

It's not a longevity test.

It doesn't predict how long you'll live.

It simply provides information about one nutritional area that may otherwise be based largely on assumption.

## Protein: technically not a longevity supplement, but highly relevant

Protein powder isn't an anti-ageing product.

It is food in a convenient form.

And after 40, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly relevant to healthy ageing.

Muscle supports:

Strength.

Movement.

Metabolic health.

Physical function.

Recovery.

And independence.

If you can comfortably meet your protein needs through food, excellent.

If a protein powder makes that easier, it can be a practical tool.

### The powder isn't the strategy.

Maintaining muscle is the strategy.

Resistance training gives your body a reason to maintain muscle.

Adequate protein gives it nutritional resources to support that process.

Our **Protein After 40** and **Strength After 40** articles explore this in much greater detail.

## Creatine: one of the more interesting conversations

Creatine has spent decades associated with bodybuilders and gym culture.

But the research conversation has become much broader.

Creatine is involved in rapid energy availability within cells, particularly tissues with high energy demands such as skeletal muscle.

It has a substantial body of evidence supporting its use alongside resistance training for improvements in strength and training adaptations in appropriate populations.

Researchers are also investigating creatine in areas such as ageing and cognitive health.

That makes it interesting.

But “interesting for healthy ageing” shouldn't become:

### “Creatine makes you live longer.”

Those are very different claims.

For someone strength training after 40, creatine may be worth discussing in the context of their goals, diet, health and overall training program.

As always, individual medical circumstances matter.

## Collagen: useful for a different reason

Collagen is another supplement frequently placed under the longevity umbrella.

But collagen shouldn't be confused with a complete dietary protein for building muscle.

Its amino-acid profile is different.

Collagen is a major structural protein found throughout connective tissues, including skin, bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments.

Our own collagen production and tissue characteristics change with age.

There is research investigating collagen peptides across several areas, particularly skin and connective tissues.

### That makes collagen potentially relevant to how we look, move and age.

But it doesn't make collagen a universal anti-ageing supplement.

At Thrive Beyond 40, collagen sits within a broader strategy involving:

Adequate overall protein.

Strength training.

Movement.

Vitamin C-containing foods.

Bone health.

Sun protection.

Sleep.

And appropriate nutrition.

Our **Collagen Renewal Program** is built around that bigger picture.

## Fibre deserves far more attention than most longevity supplements

Fibre isn't glamorous.

It doesn't usually arrive in a metallic bottle promising cellular rejuvenation.

But dietary fibre is fundamental to a healthy dietary pattern.

Different fibres have different properties.

Some contribute to bowel function.

Some can be fermented by gut microbes.

Some influence the physical characteristics of food as it moves through the gastrointestinal tract.

Fibre-rich foods also tend to bring plenty of other useful nutrients with them.

Vegetables.

Fruit.

Legumes.

Wholegrains.

Nuts.

Seeds.

### Sometimes the least exciting nutrition advice is the advice worth paying attention to.

Before spending hundreds on a longevity stack, ask whether you're consistently eating enough plants.

Our **Gut Foundations Program** focuses specifically on strengthening daily fibre nutrition alongside a varied whole-food diet.

## Magnesium: useful nutrient, enormous marketing category

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in numerous physiological processes.

It can be obtained from foods including:

Nuts.

Seeds.

Legumes.

Wholegrains.

Leafy vegetables.

And other foods.

Magnesium supplementation can be appropriate in certain circumstances.

But online wellness culture has transformed magnesium into a solution for almost everything.

Sleep.

Stress.

Muscles.

Energy.

Hormones.

Recovery.

Longevity.

The fact that a nutrient has many roles in the body doesn't mean taking more of it improves every process it participates in.

### Biological importance does not automatically equal supplementation need.

That's a principle worth remembering across the entire supplement industry.

## What about probiotics?

The microbiome is an exciting field.

It's also commercially irresistible.

Probiotic products contain particular microorganisms, but different strains can have different characteristics and evidence.

“Contains probiotics” therefore tells you surprisingly little by itself.

The gut microbiome is also influenced by diet, fibre, lifestyle, medications and many other factors.

Rather than assuming everyone needs a probiotic indefinitely, I prefer beginning with the dietary environment.

### What are you feeding your gut?

That's why fibre diversity sits at the centre of our gut-health conversation.

## What about a multivitamin?

Multivitamins can be useful in some circumstances.

But they shouldn't become nutritional insurance for a consistently poor diet.

A tablet cannot replicate the complexity of a varied dietary pattern containing:

Vegetables.

Fruit.

Legumes.

Wholegrains.

Nuts.

Seeds.

Healthy fats.

Quality protein.

And the enormous range of compounds naturally present in foods.

### Supplements supplement.

The clue is in the name.

## And then we reach the longevity celebrities

This is where things become more interesting.

NMN.

NAD+ boosters.

Resveratrol.

Spermidine.

Fisetin.

Quercetin.

Senolytics.

Various peptides.

And an ever-changing list of compounds associated with longevity research.

Some are scientifically fascinating.

That doesn't necessarily mean they're ready for routine use by healthy adults.

Research may begin in:

Cells.

Animals.

Small human trials.

Specific populations.

Or using biological markers rather than meaningful long-term health outcomes.

Then social media compresses that nuance into:

### “Scientists discover anti-ageing supplement.”

That leap should make you cautious.

## Animal longevity isn't automatically human longevity

This is one of the most important things to understand when reading longevity headlines.

A compound may extend lifespan in:

Yeast.

Worms.

Flies.

Mice.

That can provide important scientific clues.

But humans are not large mice.

We live much longer.

We have different physiology.

Different environments.

Different diseases.

Different diets.

Different behaviours.

And decades of interacting variables.

### Interesting laboratory science is the beginning of a question.

It isn't always the answer.

## Biomarkers aren't the same as living longer

Another common trap is assuming that changing a biological marker proves a supplement increases longevity.

Imagine a supplement changes:

A metabolic pathway.

A blood marker.

A gene-expression pattern.

An inflammatory marker.

Or something described as a biological-age measurement.

That may be scientifically interesting.

But it doesn't necessarily demonstrate that the person will:

Live longer.

Avoid disease.

Remain independent.

Or enjoy more healthy years.

### Surrogate outcomes need context.

This is particularly important in a field where waiting 40 years for the definitive trial isn't commercially convenient.

## “Natural” doesn't mean risk-free

Supplements can:

Interact with medication.

Affect blood clotting.

Influence blood pressure.

Cause gastrointestinal symptoms.

Provide excessive amounts of nutrients.

Be inappropriate with particular health conditions.

Or interfere with medical treatment.

And products purchased online may vary considerably in quality.

### Supplements are biologically active.

That's often the entire reason people want to take them.

So it doesn't make sense to simultaneously assume they can't cause harm.

If you take medication, have a medical condition, are pregnant, preparing for surgery or are undergoing treatment, discuss relevant supplements with an appropriate healthcare professional.

## Quality matters

If you decide a supplement has a place, don't look only at the front of the bottle.

Consider:

What's actually in it?

How much?

What form?

Is the dose meaningful?

Are unnecessary ingredients included?

Is the manufacturer reputable?

Is there appropriate quality testing?

Does the product clearly identify its ingredients?

Are the claims credible?

### A beautiful label isn't evidence.

Neither is an influencer holding the bottle.

## More is not better

This principle deserves its own section.

Nutrition operates within ranges.

Too little of something can be problematic.

That doesn't mean unlimited amounts become increasingly beneficial.

Some nutrients can cause harm at excessive intakes.

Others simply provide no additional benefit once needs are met.

### The goal isn't maximum supplementation.

It's appropriate nutrition.

That sounds less exciting.

It's also much harder to sell.

## Testing can help, but don't test everything

I'm a strong believer in understanding your starting point where meaningful testing is available.

But testing can become another form of health consumerism.

Not every marker marketed online is clinically useful.

Not every “biological age” score needs to be known.

Not every nutritional decision requires a laboratory.

Ask:

**Is this test validated and meaningful?**

**What exactly does it measure?**

**What doesn't it measure?**

**Will the result change what I do?**

**Can I measure change again?**

That is why I like the structure:

### TEST → UNDERSTAND → SUPPORT → RETEST

Not because everyone needs endless testing.

Because if we're going to measure something, the result should help us make a better decision.

## Spend money where it matters

Longevity can become an expensive hobby.

Before building a $300-a-month supplement routine, consider whether the same money would be better invested in:

A gym membership.

A strength coach.

Better food.

A dietitian.

A psychologist.

A physiotherapist.

A medical check-up.

Better footwear.

A mattress that helps you sleep.

A holiday with people you love.

Or simply creating enough time to move, cook and recover.

### Health investment isn't synonymous with supplement spending.

Sometimes the highest-return investment isn't sold in a bottle.

## Build your supplement strategy from the bottom up

A sensible hierarchy might look like this:

### 1. BUILD THE FOUNDATIONS

Food.

Movement.

Strength.

Sleep.

Connection.

Preventive healthcare.

### 2. IDENTIFY A REASON

What are you actually trying to support?

### 3. UNDERSTAND YOUR STARTING POINT

Use dietary assessment, appropriate health checks or meaningful testing where relevant.

### 4. LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE

Not the marketing.

### 5. PERSONALISE

Your age, diet, medications, health, goals and activity level matter.

### 6. MEASURE WHEN IT MAKES SENSE

If something can meaningfully be retested, look at whether your strategy changed it.

### 7. KEEP THE BIGGER PICTURE

Never let the supplement become more important than the health behaviour it was supposed to support.

## So which longevity supplements are worth paying attention to?

There isn't one universal stack.

For one person, vitamin D may deserve attention because their levels are low.

For another, omega-3 intake and fatty-acid status may be relevant.

Someone strength training may find protein or creatine useful.

Someone interested in skin and connective-tissue nutrition may choose collagen.

Someone struggling to consume adequate fibre may benefit from targeted fibre support.

Another person may need none of those.

### Personalised doesn't mean complicated.

Sometimes it simply means not assuming everybody needs the same thing.

## Longevity is built more often than it is bought

The longevity industry is exciting.

Research into ageing is fascinating.

And there will undoubtedly be discoveries in the years ahead that change how we think about healthy ageing.

We should remain curious.

But curiosity doesn't require us to buy everything early.

Your strongest longevity strategy today is still built largely from remarkably ordinary behaviours.

Move.

Lift.

Eat well.

Sleep.

Maintain healthy relationships.

Look after your heart.

Protect your metabolic health.

Don't smoke.

Use alcohol thoughtfully.

Stay engaged with life.

Attend appropriate health checks.

And use targeted nutrition when there is a sensible reason for it.

### Don't build the world's most sophisticated supplement routine around an unhealthy life.

Start with the life.

Then support it intelligently.

Because the goal isn't to own the best longevity stack.

### It's to build the health that gives you more good years to live.

**Age Well. Live Well.**
