## Omega-3 isn't just another supplement trend. These fats are part of you.

Omega-3 is one of those nutrients most of us have heard we should be getting more of.

Eat oily fish.

Take fish oil.

Look for EPA and DHA.

Good for the heart.

Good for the brain.

But what does that actually mean?

And why should we be thinking about omega-3 differently after 40?

For me, the most interesting part of the omega-3 story isn't the supplement bottle.

It's what happens **inside the body**.

Fatty acids form part of the membranes surrounding our cells. EPA and DHA are long-chain omega-3 fatty acids that can become incorporated into these membranes, making fatty-acid balance part of a much bigger conversation about nutrition and cellular health.

And unlike many aspects of healthy ageing, your fatty-acid profile is something you can actually measure.

### Instead of simply assuming you're getting enough, you can understand your starting point.

That's where omega-3 becomes particularly interesting.

## First, what actually is omega-3?

Omega-3 refers to a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The three you'll most commonly hear about are:

**ALA**

Alpha-linolenic acid, found primarily in plant foods such as flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts.

**EPA**

Eicosapentaenoic acid, found predominantly in marine sources.

**DHA**

Docosahexaenoic acid, also found predominantly in marine sources.

ALA is an essential fatty acid, meaning we need to obtain it through our diet.

Our bodies can convert some ALA into EPA and DHA, but that conversion is limited.

That's one reason marine sources of EPA and DHA become particularly valuable.

## Why do EPA and DHA matter?

EPA and DHA aren't simply nutrients that pass through us.

They become incorporated into tissues throughout the body.

DHA is particularly abundant in the brain and retina, while EPA and DHA are also incorporated into cell membranes.

And both have well-established physiological roles.

EPA and DHA contribute to the **normal function of the heart**.

DHA contributes to the maintenance of **normal brain function** and **normal vision**.

These aren't abstract benefits.

Think about what most of us actually want from healthy ageing.

We want to stay mentally sharp.

Stay active.

Protect cardiovascular health.

Maintain our independence.

And continue doing the things that make life enjoyable.

### Omega-3 belongs naturally in that bigger healthy-ageing picture.

## Why think about omega-3 after 40?

Nothing magical happens to your omega-3 levels on your 40th birthday.

But our 40s are often when our relationship with health begins to change.

We start thinking less about what gets us through today and more about what we're building for tomorrow.

Heart health starts to feel more relevant.

Brain health becomes something we want to protect.

We begin thinking about strength, recovery and body composition.

Women may be moving through perimenopause.

Family history suddenly feels more meaningful.

And prevention begins to make much more sense than waiting until something goes wrong.

That's why I see omega-3 as part of a **proactive healthy-ageing strategy**.

Not because it promises to prevent ageing.

Because it supports important nutritional foundations within a body that we want to keep functioning well for decades.

## Your cells are part of the story

This is one of my favourite ways to think about omega-3.

Your body is made up of trillions of cells.

And every one of those cells is surrounded by a membrane.

Fatty acids are important structural components of those cell membranes.

The types of fatty acids incorporated into membranes influence their physical properties, including how fluid and flexible those membranes are.

This is why the conversation around omega-3 isn't simply:

*"Did I take my fish oil today?"*

It's much more interesting.

### What does my fatty-acid profile actually look like?

Because the balance of fatty acids in your body provides insight into what is happening at a cellular level.

And that's something we can measure.

## Omega-3 and omega-6 aren't enemies

You've probably heard that omega-6 is "bad" and omega-3 is "good".

It's not that simple.

We need both.

Omega-6 fatty acids perform important functions in the body, just as omega-3 fatty acids do.

The issue is **balance**.

Modern eating patterns can provide plenty of omega-6 while marine omega-3 intake may be relatively low.

That can influence the fatty-acid profile incorporated into our tissues.

So rather than trying to eliminate omega-6, I prefer a much more useful question:

### Are you getting enough omega-3 to support a healthier fatty-acid balance?

That's a very different conversation.

## Food is still the foundation

As with everything we do at Thrive Beyond 40, food comes first.

Marine sources of EPA and DHA include oily fish such as:

Salmon.

Sardines.

Mackerel.

Herring.

Trout.

Other seafood can contribute smaller amounts too.

Plant foods including chia seeds, flaxseed and walnuts provide ALA.

So if you enjoy fish, including oily fish regularly is an excellent nutritional habit.

But there's another question worth asking.

### How consistently are you actually doing it?

For many of us, the answer is:

Not as often as we think.

Life gets busy.

Meals vary.

Fish might appear once this week and not at all the next.

And even people who consider themselves healthy eaters can have a fatty-acid profile that isn't where they expected it to be.

Which brings me to one of the principles I believe in most strongly.

## Test, don't just guess

Most people choose an omega-3 supplement like this:

They walk into a shop.

Pick up a bottle.

Read the front.

Take a capsule or two.

And hope they're getting enough.

But if you're going to invest in targeted nutrition, wouldn't it be more useful to understand your starting point first?

That's the philosophy behind the [**Thrive Beyond 40 Balance Program**](https://www.thrivebeyond40.au/balance-program).

We begin with an at-home dried blood spot test that analyses **11 fatty acids** and provides six different markers relating to your fatty-acid profile.

That includes your:

**Omega-6:3 Balance**

**Omega-3 Index**

and other markers that help build a broader picture of your fatty-acid status.

Instead of:

*"I take omega-3, so I assume I'm fine."*

We can ask:

### "What does my body actually show?"

That's a much more personalised approach.

## What is the Omega-3 Index?

The Omega-3 Index provides insight into the amount of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids **EPA and DHA** within the fatty-acid profile being measured.

In simple terms, it helps answer:

### Are these important marine omega-3 fatty acids actually showing up in your body?

That's useful information.

Because taking a supplement and achieving a particular fatty-acid profile aren't necessarily the same thing.

Diet matters.

Dosage matters.

Consistency matters.

Your starting point matters.

And individuals can respond differently.

This is why measurement can add something that generic recommendations cannot.

## What about the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio?

Another measurement we look at is fatty-acid balance.

The BalanceTest specifically calculates its Omega-6:3 Balance using **arachidonic acid (AA) relative to EPA**.

Within the Balance Concept, the target is to bring this ratio **below 3:1**.

But rather than turn this article into a lesson in fatty-acid ratios, there's a separate Thrive Journal article where we explore exactly what that measurement means.

The important point here is simpler:

### Your fatty-acid balance can be measured.

And it can change.

That turns omega-3 from generic nutritional advice into something much more personal.

## Perimenopause is another reason to think proactively

For women, the 40s often bring another major transition.

### Perimenopause.

Hormonal changes can affect many aspects of how we feel and how our bodies function.

Sleep.

Mood.

Body composition.

Cardiovascular risk factors.

Bone health.

Brain fog.

Recovery.

And while omega-3 isn't a treatment for perimenopause, this stage of life can be an excellent prompt to look more closely at our overall nutritional foundations.

Because the question isn't simply:

*"What can I take for my symptoms?"*

I think there's a bigger question:

### "What does my body need as I move into the next stage of life?"

Adequate protein.

Fibre.

Plants.

Healthy fats.

Calcium and vitamin D where appropriate.

Movement.

Strength.

Sleep.

Recovery.

And enough long-chain omega-3.

Perimenopause can become an opportunity to **invest more deliberately in future health**, rather than simply something we have to endure.

## Omega-3 and the brain

Brain health is one of the areas that makes omega-3 particularly relevant to healthy ageing.

DHA is an important structural fatty acid in the brain and contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function.

And that matters because when most of us imagine ageing well, we aren't only imagining a strong body.

We want to stay curious.

Remember.

Learn.

Work.

Travel.

Have conversations.

Make decisions.

Stay independent.

And remain ourselves.

Of course, no single nutrient determines brain health.

Physical activity matters.

Sleep matters.

Cardiovascular health matters.

Social connection matters.

Learning matters.

Hearing matters.

Nutrition matters.

But omega-3 belongs within those foundations.

### Healthy ageing includes the brain too.

## Omega-3 and heart health

Heart health becomes increasingly relevant as we move through midlife.

Again, omega-3 isn't the entire strategy.

Blood pressure matters.

Movement matters.

Smoking matters.

Sleep matters.

Body composition matters.

Diet matters.

Family history matters.

Appropriate medical checks matter.

But EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart, which is another reason adequate marine omega-3 deserves a place in a broader healthy-ageing approach.

This is the pattern you'll see repeatedly at Thrive Beyond 40.

We're not looking for **one nutrient that does everything**.

We're building layers of support.

## Not all fish oil is the same

This is where supplement labels can become confusing.

A bottle might say:

**1,000 mg fish oil**

But that doesn't necessarily mean it contains 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA.

Fish oil and EPA+DHA are not interchangeable numbers.

So if you're choosing an omega-3 supplement, look beyond the large number on the front of the bottle.

Look at the actual amount of:

**EPA**

and

**DHA**

provided by the recommended serving.

Quality, freshness, formulation and how consistently you're actually going to take it matter too.

### Don't judge an omega-3 by the biggest number on the label.

## Why we use BalanceOil+

Within the Balance Program, our targeted omega-3 support comes from [**BalanceOil+**](https://www.zinzino.com/2020923829/au/en-gb/explore/balance-concept).

It combines marine-derived EPA and DHA with Spanish Picual olive oil and vitamin D.

What I particularly like isn't simply the formulation.

It's the way we use it.

We don't begin with:

*"Everyone take the same amount and hope for the best."*

We begin with a test.

Then the daily routine is personalised according to factors including body weight and your starting point.

And after approximately **120 days**, we test again.

That's where it becomes very different from simply buying another supplement.

### Test → Understand → Support → Retest

We want to know where you started.

Support the nutritional foundation.

Then see what changed.

## Why approximately 120 days?

Nutrition doesn't rewrite your fatty-acid profile overnight.

Fatty acids are incorporated into tissues over time.

That's why the Balance approach isn't built around taking something for a week and deciding whether you "feel different".

The retest occurs after approximately four months.

That gives us the opportunity to compare your fatty-acid profile over time.

And I love that.

Because sometimes nutritional change is happening long before there is a dramatic feeling attached to it.

### Not every meaningful health change is something you can feel.

Sometimes you need to measure it.

## Do you actually feel different when your omega-3 improves?

This is an important question.

Some people may report subjective changes when they improve their diet or nutritional status.

Others may not notice anything dramatic at all.

And that's okay.

Omega-3 shouldn't be judged solely by whether you wake up one morning feeling transformed.

We're talking about nutrition.

Foundations.

Fatty-acid status.

Cell membranes.

Heart and brain function.

And long-term healthy-ageing habits.

That's another reason I like testing.

It moves the conversation away from:

*"Do I think this is working?"*

towards:

### "What changed?"

## Cellular health starts with good foundations

You'll hear me talk about [**cellular health**](https://www.zinzino.com/2020923829/au/en-gb/explore/balance-concept) often at Thrive Beyond 40.

Not because it's a trendy wellness phrase.

Because ultimately, our bodies are built from cells.

Fatty acids form part of cell membranes.

Protein provides building blocks throughout the body.

Fibre feeds the gut environment.

Vitamins and minerals participate in countless normal processes.

Movement gives our muscles and bones a reason to remain capable.

Sleep gives us time to recover.

None of these works in isolation.

That's why I don't believe healthy ageing comes from chasing one miracle ingredient.

### It comes from building better foundations.

Omega-3 is one of them.

## You don't need to obsess over nutrition

There's a danger with healthy ageing that we turn it into another full-time job.

Count everything.

Track everything.

Optimise everything.

Measure everything.

That's not what I want Thrive Beyond 40 to become.

Testing should simplify decisions, not create anxiety.

If your fatty-acid profile shows there's room for improvement, you have useful information.

Then you can act on it.

Eat more oily fish.

Use targeted omega-3 nutrition consistently.

Build better habits.

Retest.

And get on with living your life.

### Health is the foundation. Life is the point.

## So, are you getting enough omega-3?

You could look at your diet and make an educated guess.

Or you can measure.

That's the shift that changed the way I think about omega-3.

Because "I eat pretty well" doesn't tell you your Omega-3 Index.

"I take fish oil" doesn't tell you your fatty-acid balance.

And "I feel healthy" doesn't necessarily tell you what is happening at a cellular level.

That doesn't mean everyone needs to become obsessed with health data.

It simply means that when a useful measurement exists, we can choose to use it.

### Understand first.

Then make an informed decision about what comes next.

## Omega-3 after 40 is about the years ahead

I don't take an interest in omega-3 because I'm trying to live forever.

I'm interested because I want my healthy years to be good ones.

I want to think clearly.

Move.

Travel.

Work.

Be active.

Keep learning.

Stay independent.

And continue participating fully in my life.

That's what healthy ageing means to me.

And that's why nutritional foundations matter.

Eat well.

Move.

Build strength.

Sleep.

Stay connected.

Know the health numbers that matter.

And where personalised testing can give you useful information, use it.

Don't just take omega-3 because you've heard it's good for you.

Understand your starting point.

Support your fatty-acid balance.

Build from within.

Then measure what changed.

**Understand. Support. Measure. Thrive.**

**Age Well. Live Well.**

## Ready to understand your Omega-3?

Start with what your body tells you.

The [**Thrive Beyond 40 Balance Program**](https://www.thrivebeyond40.au/balance-program) combines an at-home fatty-acid test with personalised nutritional support and retesting after approximately 120 days.

Instead of guessing whether you're getting enough omega-3, understand your starting point and build from there.
