# Strength After 40: Why Muscle Is One of Your Best Investments in Healthy Ageing

## Muscle isn't just about how strong you look. It's about how much life your body can keep doing.

For years, exercise advice was remarkably predictable.

If you wanted to be healthy, do cardio.

If you wanted to lose weight, do more cardio.

And if you wanted bigger muscles?

Lift weights.

Thankfully, that conversation is changing.

Because muscle isn't reserved for bodybuilders.

It isn't simply about appearance.

And strength training isn't something we should become less interested in as we get older.

### It may become more important.

After 40, maintaining muscle and strength becomes part of a much bigger healthy-ageing picture.

Movement.

Metabolic health.

Bone health.

Balance.

Physical capability.

Recovery.

Independence.

And ultimately, your ability to keep doing the things that make life enjoyable.

At Thrive Beyond 40, that's the part I'm interested in.

Not building muscle simply for the sake of having more muscle.

### Building strength because you have places you still want your body to take you.

## Muscle is an organ of movement

When we think about muscle, we tend to think about what we can see.

Arms.

Legs.

Shoulders.

Perhaps abdominal muscles if we're feeling particularly ambitious.

But skeletal muscle is a major tissue throughout the body.

It's what allows you to:

Walk.

Climb stairs.

Lift.

Carry.

Push.

Pull.

Stand up.

Balance.

Travel.

Garden.

Hike.

Play.

And move through everyday life.

We often don't appreciate how valuable those abilities are until they become harder.

### Healthy ageing isn't only about living longer.

It's about protecting your ability to participate in your own life.

## Muscle changes as we age

Ageing is associated with gradual changes in muscle mass, quality and strength.

The medical term **sarcopenia** describes age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength that can become clinically significant.

But here's the important part.

Knowing that muscle changes with age isn't a reason to accept weakness as inevitable.

It's a reason to become more intentional about maintaining strength.

Your muscles respond to being used.

### Give your body a reason to stay strong.

## Your 40s are an excellent time to start

You don't have to wait until you're older to become interested in muscle.

In fact, I'd argue the opposite.

Your 40s and 50s are an excellent time to start building the physical reserve you want later.

Think of it as another form of investing.

You wouldn't necessarily wait until retirement to start thinking about superannuation.

So why wait until physical capability begins declining before thinking about strength?

### Build before you desperately need it.

That's the healthy-ageing mindset.

## Strength is really about freedom

This is where strength training becomes much more interesting than simply changing how your body looks.

Imagine yourself at 70.

You want to travel.

Your suitcase needs to go into the overhead locker.

Can you lift it?

You want to play with grandchildren.

Can you get down onto the floor and comfortably get back up?

You want to live independently.

Can you carry groceries?

Climb stairs?

Move furniture?

Get out of a low chair?

Catch yourself if you stumble?

The gym exercise isn't really the goal.

### Life outside the gym is the goal.

The squat helps you stand.

The deadlift helps you pick things up.

The row helps you pull.

The carry helps you carry.

The step-up helps you climb.

Suddenly strength training doesn't look like vanity.

It looks like preparation.

## Women need this conversation too

For generations, many women were actively discouraged from lifting weights.

Weights would make you "bulky".

Cardio was for women.

The weights room was for men.

Thankfully, we're moving beyond that.

For women approaching and moving through menopause, maintaining muscle becomes particularly relevant as body composition, bone health and metabolic health change with age and hormonal transition.

That doesn't mean every woman needs to chase a particular physique.

### It means women deserve to be strong.

Strong enough for everyday life.

Strong enough for the decades ahead.

Strong enough to challenge outdated ideas about what ageing should look like.

## Strength and bone health belong together

Muscle isn't the only tissue responding to physical loading.

Bone does too.

Weight-bearing activity and resistance training form an important part of supporting bone health.

That's particularly relevant for women as oestrogen declines around menopause and bone loss can accelerate.

Again, this is why I think healthy ageing needs to become proactive.

We generally can't feel bone density changing.

But we can build habits that support our musculoskeletal health before a problem becomes obvious.

### Strong muscles. Stronger foundations.

## Muscle also belongs in the metabolic-health conversation

Skeletal muscle isn't merely mechanical.

It's metabolically active tissue and plays an important role in glucose metabolism.

When muscles contract during activity, they're using energy.

Regular physical activity and maintaining muscle therefore belong in the broader conversation around metabolic health.

This matters because after 40 we're increasingly thinking about:

Blood glucose.

Insulin sensitivity.

Body composition.

Cardiovascular risk.

Healthy weight.

And long-term metabolic health.

### Building strength isn't separate from healthy ageing.

It's part of it.

## Stop making weight the only measure of progress

This is particularly important for women.

The scales can become incredibly powerful psychologically.

You've been exercising.

Eating well.

Feeling stronger.

Your clothes fit differently.

You can lift more.

You have more energy.

But the number hasn't moved as much as you hoped.

So you assume nothing is working.

That's one reason body weight alone can be such an incomplete measure.

If healthy ageing is the goal, I want to know more.

Are you stronger?

Are you fitter?

How is your waist circumference changing, if that's relevant to you?

How are your blood pressure and metabolic markers?

Can you move better?

Do you have more energy?

Can you do something now that you couldn't do six months ago?

### Progress deserves more than one number.

## Protein gives muscle something to work with

Strength training provides a stimulus.

Nutrition provides building materials.

Protein supplies amino acids used to build and maintain body proteins, including muscle tissue.

And as we age, being intentional about protein becomes increasingly useful.

That doesn't mean you need enormous protein shakes with every meal.

Start with food.

Eggs.

Fish.

Chicken.

Lean meat.

Greek yoghurt.

Cottage cheese.

Milk.

Tofu.

Legumes.

Nuts and seeds.

Try spreading good-quality protein sources across your day rather than leaving most of your protein until dinner.

### Train the muscle.

### Then nourish it.

## Don't diet your muscle away

This is something I think deserves far more attention in the weight-loss conversation after 40.

If you're trying to reduce body fat, the goal shouldn't simply be:

**Lose as much weight as possible, as quickly as possible.**

Because weight loss can include loss of lean tissue too.

And muscle is valuable tissue.

A sensible approach to healthy weight loss therefore needs to think about preserving muscle through appropriate nutrition, adequate protein and resistance training.

### The goal isn't simply becoming lighter.

It's improving body composition while protecting the body you want to keep using.

That's a much better long-term investment.

## You don't have to live in the gym

This is where people often switch off.

They imagine strength training means:

Six workouts a week.

Heavy barbells.

Gym selfies.

Protein shakers.

And knowing what every machine does.

It doesn't.

Australian physical activity guidance recommends adults include muscle-strengthening activities on at least **two days each week**.

That can take many forms.

Free weights.

Machines.

Resistance bands.

Body-weight exercises.

Pilates-style resistance.

Circuit training.

Working with an exercise professional.

Even certain everyday physical activities can challenge muscle.

The best program isn't the most impressive one.

### It's the one you'll continue doing.

## Start where you actually are

If you've never lifted weights, don't begin by copying the workout of someone who has trained for ten years.

Learn.

Start lighter.

Focus on technique.

Progress gradually.

Give your body time to adapt.

If you have injuries, significant pain, osteoporosis, medical conditions or you're unsure where to begin, getting individual guidance from an appropriately qualified health or exercise professional can be incredibly valuable.

You don't need to prove anything.

### You're building for the long term.

## Progressive challenge matters

Once your body becomes accustomed to something, it needs an appropriate reason to continue adapting.

That doesn't mean adding enormous amounts of weight every week.

Progress can mean:

A little more resistance.

Another repetition.

Better technique.

Greater control.

Improved range of movement.

A more challenging variation.

More consistency.

The principle is simple.

### Keep giving your body an appropriate challenge.

Not punishment.

Challenge.

## Recovery is part of getting stronger

This connects directly with our previous article.

Muscle doesn't become stronger because you relentlessly train it without rest.

Training and recovery work together.

That means:

Sleep.

Adequate food.

Protein.

Hydration.

Rest between challenging sessions.

Managing overall training load.

And recognising when your body needs more time.

After 40, becoming better at recovery can allow you to keep training consistently.

And consistency is where the magic tends to happen.

### Train. Recover. Adapt. Repeat.

## What about collagen?

Muscle doesn't operate independently.

It works alongside bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and other connective tissues.

Collagen is an important structural protein within many of these tissues.

That's why I see our [Collagen Renewal Program](https://www.thrivebeyond40.au/collagen-renewal-program) as broader than simply a beauty program.

Our targeted marine collagen formulation provides **Types I and III collagen peptides**, alongside vitamin C and complementary nutrients.

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones and cartilage.

And protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass and the maintenance of normal bones.

But there's an important distinction.

### Collagen doesn't replace resistance training.

Targeted nutrition supports the foundation.

Movement provides the stimulus.

That's why our philosophy remains:

**Food and lifestyle foundations first. Targeted nutrition where it adds value.**

## Strength training doesn't make you less feminine

I wish this section weren't necessary.

But for some women, it still is.

Building strength doesn't require changing who you are.

You can love beautiful clothes.

Skin care.

Travel.

Wine with friends.

High heels.

Yoga.

Fine dining.

And lifting weights.

They're not competing identities.

Healthy ageing doesn't require becoming a fitness personality.

### You can simply become a stronger version of yourself.

And personally, I think there's something incredibly powerful about that.

## Muscle won't solve everything

Strength training is having a deserved moment in healthy-ageing conversations.

But let's not turn muscle into the next miracle cure.

You still need cardiovascular fitness.

You still need sleep.

You still need good nutrition.

You still need healthy relationships.

You still need preventive healthcare.

You still need recovery.

You still need a life outside the gym.

Muscle is one important part of a much bigger picture.

### Healthy ageing works best when the foundations work together.

## Measure capability, not just appearance

Here's a different way to think about progress.

Instead of only asking:

*"Do I look different?"*

Ask:

Can I lift more than I could six months ago?

Can I carry heavier groceries?

Can I climb stairs more easily?

Can I walk further?

Can I get off the floor comfortably?

Is my balance improving?

Can I travel without worrying whether I'll physically manage it?

Do I feel more confident using my body?

Those are meaningful outcomes.

### Because the body you're building isn't just for looking at.

It's for living in.

## Imagine what strong could mean at 70

This is the image I want you to keep.

Not a perfect body.

Not visible abs.

Not trying to look 30.

Imagine yourself at 70.

You're travelling.

Walking through airports.

Exploring cities.

Carrying bags.

Swimming.

Gardening.

Playing.

Dancing.

Getting onto the floor.

Getting back up.

Saying yes to things because your body still gives you options.

Then ask:

### What can I start building now that future me will be grateful for?

Perhaps it's muscle.

Perhaps it's balance.

Perhaps it's fitness.

Perhaps it's simply the confidence to walk into a gym and begin.

You don't need to become the strongest person in the room.

### You just need to keep building enough strength for the life you want to live.

**Build strength.**

**Nourish muscle.**

**Protect your bones.**

**Recover well.**

**Keep moving.**

Because strength after 40 isn't really about lifting weights.

### It's about protecting freedom.

**Health is the foundation. Life is the point.**

**Age Well. Live Well.**

## Ready to build for the years ahead?

Strong today. Capable tomorrow.

Thrive Beyond 40 is about building the foundations that help you stay active, capable and confident as you age.

Strength.

Movement.

Nutrition.

Recovery.

And targeted support where it adds value.

Because the goal isn't simply to live longer.

It's to keep doing more with the years you have.
