# The Executive Health Trap: When Career Success Outpaces Your Health

## You can be performing at the top of your career while quietly neglecting the body that got you there.

On paper, you're doing well.

Career progressing.

Business growing.

Income strong.

Calendar full.

People rely on you.

You make decisions, solve problems and keep things moving.

Perhaps you travel regularly, entertain clients, manage a team, sit on boards or spend your days moving from one meeting to another.

From the outside, it looks like success.

But somewhere along the way, something else may have happened.

Exercise became less consistent.

Lunch started happening at your desk.

Sleep shortened.

Stress increased.

A few kilos appeared.

Another coffee became easier than taking a break.

Friday drinks became client drinks, networking drinks and airport lounge drinks.

Annual health checks kept getting pushed down the list.

And because you're still functioning at a high level, it doesn't necessarily feel urgent.

### That's the executive health trap.

Being capable of pushing through isn't the same as being healthy.

And after 40, that's an important distinction.

## Success can hide a lot

High-performing people are often exceptionally good at functioning under pressure.

That's part of how they became successful.

You learn to compartmentalise.

Adapt.

Push through fatigue.

Perform when you don't feel your best.

Meet the deadline anyway.

Solve the problem.

Turn up.

But those same skills can make it surprisingly easy to normalise things that deserve attention.

*"I'm always tired. That's just work."*

*"My sleep isn't great, but whose is?"*

*"I've put on weight because I'm getting older."*

*"I'll start exercising again when this project is finished."*

*"I feel fine, so I'm probably healthy."*

Individually, none of those statements tells us very much.

Together, they can create a pattern.

### High performance can mask poor foundations for quite a long time.

## Blind spot #1: Feeling well isn't the same as knowing your health

This may be the biggest one.

If nothing hurts and you're getting through your day, it's easy to assume everything is fine.

But many of the health factors that become increasingly relevant through midlife aren't necessarily things you can feel.

Blood pressure can rise without obvious symptoms.

Cholesterol can change.

Blood glucose and metabolic health can shift.

Bone density can decline.

Body composition can change even when the number on the scales doesn't move dramatically.

For women, the menopausal transition can also affect cardiovascular, bone and metabolic health alongside more familiar symptoms.

### You don't need to become obsessed with testing.

But you do need to know what deserves measuring.

That starts with appropriate preventive healthcare.

Talk to your GP about the checks relevant to your age, family history and individual risk.

Know your blood pressure.

Understand your blood lipids.

Pay attention to metabolic health.

Keep recommended screening up to date.

Then use additional nutritional or wellness testing selectively when the information can help you make a meaningful decision.

At Thrive Beyond 40, that's the principle we follow:

### Measure what you're prepared to act on.

## Blind spot #2: Sitting all week and exercising hard on Saturday isn't quite the same as being active

Many professionals have an interesting relationship with exercise.

Their job is highly sedentary.

Hours at a desk.

Meetings.

Flights.

Cars.

Restaurants.

Screens.

Then they try to compensate with a punishing workout.

The weekend run.

A hard gym session.

A long bike ride.

Perhaps competitive sport.

That exercise is valuable.

But it doesn't completely erase an otherwise inactive week.

### Movement and exercise are related, but they're not identical.

Your body benefits from regular movement throughout the day as well as intentional exercise.

Walk between meetings where possible.

Take the stairs.

Stand up.

Carry things.

Get outside at lunchtime.

Strength train.

Include cardiovascular exercise.

Play sport.

Move because your body was designed to move, not simply because your watch says you haven't closed your rings.

## Muscle is professional infrastructure too

This is something more executives should think about.

Muscle isn't just for athletes or people who enjoy gyms.

It's part of your physical reserve.

After 40, maintaining muscle and strength becomes increasingly important for healthy ageing, metabolic health and future physical capability.

And if most of your working life takes place in a chair, you need to create opportunities to challenge your muscles deliberately.

Resistance training at least twice a week is a useful general target within Australian physical activity guidance.

That doesn't mean spending two hours in a gym every day.

### Efficient strength training can deliver a lot of value for the time invested.

And time is something high performers understand.

Think of it as building physical capital.

## Blind spot #3: Sleep sacrifice isn't a badge of ambition

There is still a strange culture around sleep in some professional environments.

Four hours?

*"I'm used to it."*

Emails at 11:30 pm?

*"That's leadership."*

Back online at 5:30 am?

*"That's what it takes."*

Occasionally, life demands unusual hours.

But chronic sleep restriction isn't a performance strategy.

Sleep supports cognition, memory, mood, physical recovery and health.

And for executives, cognition is not a minor issue.

### Your brain is part of your business equipment.

You use it to make decisions involving money.

People.

Risk.

Strategy.

Negotiation.

Relationships.

Opportunity.

If you wouldn't repeatedly operate expensive equipment without maintaining it, why treat your own cognitive capacity differently?

## Caffeine isn't recovery

Coffee can absolutely be part of an enjoyable, healthy lifestyle.

I like coffee.

The problem is when caffeine becomes the mechanism that allows you to repeatedly ignore inadequate recovery.

Poor sleep.

Coffee.

Afternoon crash.

More coffee.

Late work.

Poor sleep.

Repeat.

At some point, it's worth asking whether you're improving performance or simply disguising fatigue.

### Energy and stimulation aren't the same thing.

Sometimes the highest-performance decision is remarkably boring.

Go to bed.

## Blind spot #4: Your supplement drawer isn't a health strategy

Successful professionals can be particularly vulnerable to health optimisation marketing.

Because there's money available and time is limited, shortcuts are appealing.

A supplement for energy.

Something for sleep.

Something for stress.

Something for the gym.

A greens powder.

A longevity capsule.

A nootropic.

Fish oil.

Collagen.

Magnesium.

Another product someone mentioned on a podcast.

Before long, you've built an impressive collection.

But ask the harder question:

### Why are you taking each one?

And:

### Do you know whether you need it?

Supplements can absolutely have a role.

We use targeted nutritional support within Thrive Beyond 40.

But my philosophy is very different from throwing everything at the body and hoping something works.

Start with food and lifestyle foundations.

Understand what you're trying to support.

Use targeted nutrition where it adds value.

And where useful measurement exists, consider measuring rather than guessing.

## That's why I like test-based nutrition

Our [**Balance Program**](https://www.thrivebeyond40.au/balance-program) is a good example.

Instead of beginning with:

*"Everyone should take more fish oil."*

We start with an at-home fatty-acid test.

The BalanceTest analyses your fatty-acid profile, giving you a personalised starting point that includes your Omega-6:3 Balance and Omega-3 Index.

Then comes targeted nutritional support with BalanceOil+.

Then, after approximately 120 days:

### We test again.

**TEST → UNDERSTAND → SUPPORT → RETEST**

For someone accustomed to working with KPIs, that approach tends to make intuitive sense.

Establish the baseline.

Implement.

Measure.

Review.

### Your health doesn't need hundreds of metrics.

But useful data can help you make more informed choices.

## Blind spot #5: Client entertainment can quietly become your normal diet

Corporate life has its own nutritional environment.

Breakfast meetings.

Boardroom catering.

Airport lounges.

Client lunches.

Conference food.

Restaurant dinners.

Alcohol.

Room service.

Takeaway on the way home.

None of these things is inherently a problem.

Food is social.

Business is social.

And one of the joys of being successful is being able to enjoy good restaurants and experiences.

I certainly don't think healthy ageing means ordering grilled chicken and steamed broccoli at every dinner for the rest of your life.

### But your exceptional occasions can quietly become everyday habits.

That's when awareness matters.

If you eat out frequently, make the basics easy.

Prioritise protein.

Add vegetables.

Look for fibre.

Choose fish regularly.

Drink water.

Be thoughtful about alcohol.

Don't arrive at dinner starving because you skipped lunch.

And don't make every meal a test of willpower.

Your nutritional strategy needs to work inside your actual life.

## Alcohol deserves an adult conversation

For many professionals, alcohol isn't simply something consumed at home.

It's woven into business culture.

Friday drinks.

Networking.

Corporate boxes.

Conferences.

Client dinners.

Celebrations.

Travel.

You don't need me to tell you whether to drink.

But it is worth noticing how often professional drinking becomes habitual drinking.

Alcohol can affect sleep and recovery, adds energy without much nutritional value, and higher consumption carries health risks.

The question isn't:

*"Am I allowed to drink?"*

A more useful question might be:

### "Is the amount I'm drinking consistent with the health and performance I say I want?"

That's a decision you can make for yourself.

## Stress isn't always something you can remove

Telling a CEO, senior executive or business owner to "avoid stress" isn't particularly useful.

Some careers are demanding.

People depend on you.

Decisions have consequences.

Things go wrong.

There will be pressure.

The goal isn't necessarily to eliminate stress.

### Build greater capacity around it.

Sleep.

Movement.

Exercise.

Recovery.

Good nutrition.

Relationships.

Time outside work.

Boundaries where possible.

And professional support when needed.

Resilience isn't endlessly tolerating more.

It's having enough resources to respond, recover and continue.

## Recovery belongs in your diary too

High performers schedule what matters.

Meetings go in the calendar.

Flights go in the calendar.

Strategy sessions go in the calendar.

Board meetings go in the calendar.

Training often doesn't.

Neither does recovery.

And then both become optional.

Try treating your physical health with the same respect as another important commitment.

Book the training session.

Schedule the walk.

Protect some sleep.

Take the annual health appointment.

Have the lunch break occasionally.

Take the holiday.

### If it's never scheduled, work will happily consume the space.

## Perimenopause can collide with peak career years

For women, there's another layer that corporate health discussions have historically overlooked.

Perimenopause often arrives at exactly the time many women are operating at their highest level professionally.

Leadership.

Senior management.

Business ownership.

Parenting.

Caring for ageing parents.

Financial responsibility.

And then sleep changes.

Brain fog.

Hot flushes.

Mood changes.

Body composition shifts.

Periods become unpredictable.

Energy can feel different.

This isn't a reason to step back from ambition.

### It's a reason to understand what is happening and get appropriate support.

Talk to your GP or qualified healthcare professional about symptoms and treatment options, including menopausal hormone therapy where appropriate.

Then build the broader foundations around that medical care.

Strength.

Nutrition.

Sleep.

Cardiovascular health.

Bone health.

Recovery.

This isn't about becoming less capable.

It's about supporting yourself through a significant physiological transition.

## Men shouldn't wait for something to go wrong either

Men can fall into a different version of the same trap.

They feel fine.

They're still working.

Still training occasionally.

Still functioning.

So preventive health gets postponed.

But cardiovascular and metabolic health become increasingly important through midlife.

Body composition can change.

Muscle can decline.

Sleep problems, including sleep apnoea, can go unrecognised.

### Being busy isn't a health assessment.

Neither is feeling invincible.

Preventive healthcare belongs on the executive agenda too.

## Blind spot #6: You've planned financially for later, but not physically

This may be the one I find most interesting.

Successful professionals often spend decades planning for future financial freedom.

Superannuation.

Investments.

Property.

Businesses.

Insurance.

Estate planning.

Retirement strategies.

We understand delayed gratification.

We put money away today because we want choices later.

### Health works remarkably similarly.

The strength you build today matters later.

The cardiovascular health you protect matters later.

The habits you establish matter later.

The smoking you stop matters later.

The sleep you prioritise matters.

The preventive checks matter.

The nutritional foundations matter.

Not because every health outcome is under our control.

It isn't.

But because the actions available to us today can influence the range of possibilities we carry forward.

## Financial freedom is more valuable with physical freedom

Imagine you've done everything right financially.

You're 60.

Or 65.

You have options.

You can travel.

Reduce your hours.

Sell the business.

Spend time with family.

Play golf three times a week.

Go skiing.

Hike through Europe.

Start another company.

Volunteer.

Move overseas.

Do absolutely nothing for six months.

Fantastic.

### Now imagine having the physical capacity to enjoy those choices.

That's where [healthspan](https://www.thrivebeyond40.au/blog/healthspan-vs-lifespan-whats-the-difference) becomes very real.

We're not trying to live forever.

We're trying to increase the likelihood that more of our later years are years we can actually use.

## Don't turn health into another KPI dashboard

There's an irony here.

The moment successful people become interested in longevity, they can turn health into another performance competition.

Wearable scores.

Continuous monitoring.

Blood tests.

Cold plunges.

Supplements.

Biological-age tests.

Perfect macros.

Perfect sleep.

Perfect glucose.

Suddenly healthy ageing becomes exhausting.

That isn't the Thrive Beyond 40 philosophy.

Use data when it helps.

Measure meaningful things.

Understand your body.

But don't spend your healthy years obsessing over whether you're healthy enough.

### Your health is supposed to support your life.

Not consume it.

## The executive health strategy can actually be simple

You don't need a 47-step longevity protocol.

Start here.

**Know your important health numbers.**

**Keep preventive checks up to date.**

**Build and maintain muscle.**

**Move throughout the day.**

**Protect sleep.**

**Eat nourishing food most of the time.**

**Get enough protein and fibre.**

**Include healthy fats and marine omega-3.**

**Be thoughtful about alcohol.**

**Don't smoke.**

**Recover.**

**Use targeted nutrition where it adds value.**

**Measure when the result will change what you do.**

Then go back to running your business, leading your team or building your career.

Because healthy ageing doesn't need to become your entire identity.

## Build the health that can keep up with your success

Career success is worth celebrating.

So is building wealth.

Creating something.

Leading people.

Taking risks.

Providing for your family.

Doing meaningful work.

But success becomes even more valuable when your health gives you the capacity to enjoy it.

You've built the career.

You've built the assets.

You've built the network.

### Now build the health that lets you enjoy what you've created.

Not perfectly.

Not obsessively.

Intentionally.

**Perform well.**

**Recover well.**

**Live well.**

**Health is the foundation. Life is the point.**

**Age Well. Live Well.**
