## Most of us know our weight. Some know our cholesterol or blood pressure. But very few of us have ever looked at our fatty-acid profile.

We make decisions about nutrition every day.

We choose what to eat.

We take supplements.

We buy foods labelled “high in omega-3”.

We hear that healthy fats are important.

And often, we assume we're getting what our body needs.

But how do you actually know?

This is where testing becomes interesting.

A few drops of blood collected at home can be analysed to provide information about the fatty acids circulating in your blood, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

It isn't a complete assessment of your health.

It doesn't diagnose disease.

And it certainly can't tell you everything happening inside your cells.

But it can give you something most nutrition advice can't:

### A measurable starting point.

And that changes the conversation from simply taking something because you think you need it to understanding more about your own nutritional status.

## First, what do we mean by “cellular health”?

“Cellular health” has become a popular phrase in wellness.

Sometimes it's used so broadly that it can sound as though one test, supplement or diet can reveal or optimise everything happening inside your trillions of cells.

Human biology is considerably more complicated than that.

But there is a genuine nutritional connection.

Every cell in your body is surrounded by a **cell membrane**.

These membranes aren't simply walls.

They are dynamic structures involved in communication, transport and normal cellular function.

And fats are important structural components of those membranes.

### That is where fatty-acid nutrition enters the picture.

Omega-3, omega-6, saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids can all form part of the fatty-acid landscape within the body.

So while a fatty-acid test isn't a comprehensive “cellular health test”, it can provide useful information about some of the nutritional building blocks associated with cell membranes.

That is a much more accurate way to understand it.

## Your cells need fat

For decades, fat was treated as something we should simply eat less of.

We now understand the conversation is much more nuanced.

Different fats have different structures and roles.

Fatty acids contribute to:

Cell membranes.

Energy.

Signalling processes.

The absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

And numerous normal physiological functions.

Among the fatty acids receiving particular attention are the long-chain omega-3s **EPA and DHA**.

DHA is an important structural component of the brain and contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function.

EPA and DHA also contribute to normal heart function at appropriate intakes.

### Fat isn't simply something your body stores.

Some fats are fundamental components of how the body is built.

## Omega-3 and omega-6 are both essential

This is important.

Online nutrition discussions sometimes portray omega-6 as the villain and omega-3 as the hero.

Human nutrition isn't that simple.

Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids include essential fatty acids that must ultimately come from our diet.

The issue isn't:

**Omega-6 = bad.
Omega-3 = good.**

A more useful question is:

### What does your individual fatty-acid profile look like?

That can be influenced by dietary patterns, fish intake, supplements and individual factors.

And unlike a food diary, testing provides information about what is actually present in the blood sample.

## Eating omega-3 and measuring omega-3 are different things

You might eat salmon.

Take fish oil.

Add chia seeds to breakfast.

Or use an omega-3 supplement every day.

But knowing what you consume isn't exactly the same thing as measuring your fatty-acid profile.

This is a principle we come back to frequently at Thrive Beyond 40:

### Intake is one piece of information.

### Measurement is another.

Neither needs to become obsessive.

But if you're deliberately investing in targeted nutrition, knowing your starting point can be useful.

## So what exactly is being tested?

The test used within our [**Balance Program**](https://www.thrivebeyond40.au/balance-program) is a dried blood spot fatty-acid test.

You collect a few drops of capillary blood from your fingertip onto specially designed filter paper.

The sample is then analysed by an independent laboratory.

The BalanceTest measures **11 fatty acids**, which together represent approximately 98% of the fatty acids in the blood sample analysed. The results are reported across six fatty-acid-related markers.

The 11 measured fatty acids include saturated, monounsaturated, omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids.

### That's an important distinction.

You're not sending away a sample and receiving a mysterious “wellness score”.

You're having specific fatty acids measured.

## What are the 11 fatty acids?

The laboratory analysis includes:

**Palmitic acid**
A saturated fatty acid.

**Stearic acid**
A saturated fatty acid.

**Oleic acid**
An omega-9 monounsaturated fatty acid.

**Linoleic acid**
An omega-6 fatty acid.

**Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)**
An omega-3 fatty acid.

**Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)**
An omega-6 fatty acid.

**Dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA)**
An omega-6 fatty acid.

**Arachidonic acid (AA)**
An omega-6 fatty acid.

**Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)**
A long-chain omega-3 fatty acid.

**Docosapentaenoic acid (DPA)**
An omega-3 fatty acid.

**Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)**
A long-chain omega-3 fatty acid.

You don't need to memorise those names.

The value lies in what the overall profile can help you understand.

## Why use a dried blood spot?

One of the attractive things about this approach is its simplicity.

The sample can be collected at home using a fingertip prick rather than requiring a conventional blood draw.

The Australian BalanceTest information states that the 11 fatty acids measured represent approximately 98% of the fatty acids in the blood sample. Because blood cells can have a lifespan of up to around 120 days, the company describes the results as providing insight into longer-term dietary intake rather than simply reflecting what you ate that morning.

### That makes the test more interesting than a snapshot of yesterday's lunch.

It gives you a window into your fatty-acid profile over time.

## What is the Omega-3 Index?

One of the most useful numbers to understand is the **Omega-3 Index**.

In the BalanceTest, this is calculated from the percentage values of the marine omega-3 fatty acids **EPA + DHA** in the analysed blood sample.

Why does that matter?

Because instead of simply asking:

*"Do I eat fish?"*

or

*"Do I take an omega-3 supplement?"*

you can ask:

### What does my measured omega-3 level actually look like?

That is a much more personalised question.

## What is the Omega-6:3 Balance?

This is another area where terminology can become confusing.

There are different ways of discussing dietary omega-6 to omega-3 ratios.

The BalanceTest uses a **specific blood marker**.

Its Omega-6:3 Balance is calculated using:

### AA ÷ EPA

Arachidonic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, divided by EPA, an omega-3 fatty acid.

This is why I don't like simply saying:

*"Your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is X."*

without explaining what is actually being measured.

### Precision matters.

Especially when we're talking about health information.

## What else do the results show?

The test reports six fatty-acid-related markers derived from the measured fatty acids.

Together, these provide different ways of looking at the fatty-acid profile rather than relying on a single number.

And this is where testing can become educational.

Instead of receiving generic advice about “healthy fats”, you begin to understand:

What fatty acids were measured.

How your results compare with the test's reference or target values.

Where omega-3 sits within your profile.

How your AA:EPA balance is calculated.

And what you may want to address through food and targeted nutrition.

### Information creates context.

## Testing changes the supplement conversation

Think about how most supplements are purchased.

Someone hears omega-3 is good for them.

They buy a bottle.

They take it for a while.

Maybe they stop.

Maybe they change brands.

Maybe they take it for years.

But one question often remains unanswered:

### Did anything measurable change?

That's what makes test-based nutrition interesting.

Instead of:

**TAKE → HOPE**

we can move towards:

### TEST → UNDERSTAND → SUPPORT → RETEST

The first test establishes a baseline.

Nutrition is then adjusted.

After approximately 120 days, retesting allows you to look at how the fatty-acid profile has changed.

That doesn't make nutrition perfectly predictable.

But it does introduce something valuable.

### Feedback.

## Retesting may be the most important part

Testing once is interesting.

Testing twice can tell you something different.

Imagine your initial Omega-3 Index is lower than the reference level used by the test.

You make changes.

Perhaps you increase oily fish.

Perhaps you use targeted omega-3 nutrition.

Perhaps you become more consistent.

Then you test again.

Now you have two points in time.

### Before.

### After.

That is far more informative than simply saying:

*"I've been taking omega-3 for four months, so I assume it's working."*

## This is personalised nutrition without turning your life into a laboratory

There is a growing culture around health optimisation that can make it feel as though we need to measure everything.

Continuous glucose.

Sleep scores.

Heart-rate variability.

Body temperature.

Blood tests.

Hormones.

Genetics.

Biological age.

Wearables.

Apps.

Dashboards.

Data everywhere.

Measurement can be incredibly useful.

But more data isn't automatically better.

### Measure something when the result can help inform a meaningful decision.

That's the Thrive Beyond 40 philosophy.

We're not interested in collecting numbers for the sake of numbers.

We want information that helps you understand your body and make more informed choices.

## Food still comes first

A test doesn't replace a good diet.

Omega-3-rich foods include oily fish such as:

Salmon.

Sardines.

Mackerel.

Herring.

Trout.

Plant foods such as chia seeds, flaxseeds and walnuts provide the omega-3 fatty acid ALA.

A healthy dietary pattern also includes plenty of:

Vegetables.

Fruit.

Legumes.

Wholegrains.

Nuts.

Seeds.

Quality protein.

And healthy fats.

### Testing should improve your understanding of nutrition.

It shouldn't distract you from eating well.

## Where targeted omega-3 nutrition may fit

If someone's fatty-acid profile suggests there is room to improve their omega-3 status, food intake is an obvious place to look.

How often are they eating oily fish?

What types?

Are they already supplementing?

Are they consistent?

What does the rest of their dietary pattern look like?

Targeted omega-3 supplementation may also be considered where appropriate.

But the important shift is that you're no longer starting from:

*"Everyone needs the same thing."*

You're starting from:

### What does this person's current profile show?

That's a much more thoughtful approach.

## What does this have to do with the brain?

Quite a lot.

DHA is an important structural component of the brain and contributes to normal brain function.

Fatty acids are also components of cell membranes.

This is one reason omega-3 nutrition features in our broader [**Brain Health After 40**](https://www.thrivebeyond40.au/blog/brain-health-after-40) conversation.

But it's important not to leap from that established nutritional role to claims that fatty-acid testing can diagnose or treat psychological conditions.

It cannot.

### Nutritional foundations can sit alongside psychological care.

They do not replace it.

That's especially important for the psychologists and other healthcare professionals who refer clients to Thrive Beyond 40.

## What about heart health?

EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function at appropriate intakes.

But again, cardiovascular health is much bigger than omega-3.

Blood pressure.

Blood lipids.

Blood glucose.

Smoking.

Physical activity.

Body composition.

Family history.

Sleep.

Alcohol.

Diet.

And appropriate medical care all matter.

### One nutritional marker should never become the entire health story.

Our **Heart Health After 40** article explores those broader foundations.

## What about active adults?

For people who train, compete or simply want to remain highly active, testing can also be appealing because active people are often already interested in measurable feedback.

Pace.

Power.

Heart rate.

Strength.

Recovery.

Body composition.

But fatty-acid status should not be confused with an athletic-performance test.

The Australian Institute of Sport currently places fish oils in **Group B**, meaning there is emerging scientific support deserving further research rather than sufficiently strong evidence for broad performance claims.

### That's an important reality check.

You don't test your omega-3 level to discover whether you'll run faster next weekend.

You test because fatty-acid nutrition is part of the broader health picture.

## And that is where cellular nutrition becomes interesting

We started this article with cells.

Let's return to them.

Fatty acids are part of cell membranes.

EPA and DHA have established physiological roles.

Diet influences fatty-acid intake.

And blood testing can provide information about your fatty-acid profile.

That creates a useful chain:

### FOOD → FATTY ACIDS → BLOOD PROFILE → INFORMATION → ACTION → RETEST

It isn't magic.

It isn't a diagnosis.

It isn't a complete measure of cellular health.

It's simply a way of making one aspect of nutrition more visible.

### And sometimes seeing what's happening changes what you do next.

## Why I prefer testing to guessing

There is no shortage of health advice after 40.

Take this.

Avoid that.

Eat this.

Buy that.

Optimise this.

Measure that.

It can become exhausting.

Thrive Beyond 40 takes a simpler position.

### Understand first.

Then decide what deserves your attention.

Testing doesn't remove every uncertainty.

But when a meaningful marker can be measured, I'd rather have information than assumption.

That's the philosophy behind our Balance Program.

Not:

**Everyone needs omega-3 supplements.**

But:

### Let's understand where you're starting.

Then we can make a more informed decision about what comes next.

## Your health is bigger than a test result

This is worth remembering too.

Your health is also:

How you eat.

How you move.

How you sleep.

How strong you are.

Your cardiovascular fitness.

Your metabolic health.

Your relationships.

Your mental wellbeing.

Your medical care.

Your genetics.

Your environment.

And the life you actually want to live.

A test should help inform that bigger picture.

### It should never become the picture itself.

## Start with understanding

Perhaps that's the biggest shift test-based nutrition offers.

Instead of asking:

*"What supplement should I take?"*

Start with:

*"What do I actually know about my current status?"*

A few drops of blood won't tell you everything.

But they can tell you something.

And when that information is specific, measurable and relevant to a decision you're trying to make, it can be valuable.

### Test.

### Understand.

### Support.

### Retest.

Then use what you've learned to make more informed choices about the body you're taking into the years ahead.

**Understand. Support. Thrive.**

**Age Well. Live Well.**
