# What Is Silent Inflammation? Why It Matters After 40

## Inflammation isn't the enemy. The problem is when it doesn't switch off.

Inflammation has developed a terrible reputation.

Anti-inflammatory diets.

Anti-inflammatory supplements.

Foods we're told cause inflammation.

Foods we're told fight it.

And endless lists of symptoms supposedly proving that we're "inflamed".

But inflammation itself isn't something we want to eliminate.

In fact, we need it.

Inflammation is part of the body's normal response to injury, infection and other challenges. It helps coordinate repair and defence when we need it.

The problem is different.

### What happens when inflammatory activity remains elevated over time?

That's where the conversation around **chronic low-grade inflammation** becomes relevant, particularly as we move through our 40s, 50s and beyond.

And rather than trying to "fight inflammation" with the latest wellness hack, I think there's a much more useful way to approach it.

Understand what influences it.

Build stronger foundations.

And support the body you're taking into the future.

## What is inflammation?

Inflammation is part of your body's natural defence and repair system.

Imagine cutting your finger.

The area may become:

Red.

Warm.

Swollen.

Tender.

Those changes are part of an inflammatory response designed to help protect and repair the damaged tissue.

This is known as **acute inflammation**.

It generally has a beginning, a purpose and an end.

And it's essential.

So when we talk about inflammation in healthy ageing, we're not saying:

### "Inflammation is bad."

We're talking about what happens when inflammatory processes become **persistent rather than temporary**.

## What is chronic low-grade inflammation?

Chronic inflammation is different from the obvious redness and swelling you might see after an injury.

It can involve persistent, relatively low levels of inflammatory activity over a much longer period.

You may also hear the term:

### "Silent inflammation."

It's a useful everyday description, but it isn't a specific medical diagnosis.

You can't look at someone and know they're experiencing chronic low-grade inflammation.

And you certainly can't diagnose it from a social-media checklist of vague symptoms.

What we do know is that chronic inflammatory processes are associated with a range of age-related health conditions and can be influenced by factors including metabolic health, smoking, physical inactivity and aspects of diet and lifestyle.

That's why inflammation has become such an important part of the healthy-ageing conversation.

## Why does inflammation matter more as we age?

Researchers sometimes use the term **inflammageing** to describe the tendency towards increased chronic low-grade inflammatory activity associated with ageing.

It doesn't mean that turning 40 suddenly makes you inflamed.

Ageing is far more complex than that.

But as the years pass, changes can occur across our immune system, metabolism, body composition and tissues.

At the same time, decades of lifestyle and environmental influences begin to accumulate.

How much we move.

What we eat.

Whether we smoke.

How we sleep.

Our body composition.

Our metabolic health.

Our exposure to chronic stress.

These things don't determine our future individually.

But together, they help shape the environment in which we age.

### Healthy ageing is rarely about one thing.

It's about the foundations working together.

## Your 40s are an opportunity

I don't want the message here to be:

*"You're over 40, so inflammation is coming for you."*

Quite the opposite.

Your 40s can be an incredibly useful time to become **more proactive**.

There may still be decades ahead.

That's decades of meals.

Decades of movement.

Decades of strength training.

Decades of sleep.

Decades of health checks.

Decades of choices that can accumulate in either direction.

So instead of becoming frightened by the idea of "silent inflammation", I prefer another question:

### What can I do now to create a healthier environment for the years ahead?

That's much more empowering.

## Perimenopause adds another layer

For women, our 40s often coincide with **perimenopause**.

Hormonal changes during the menopausal transition can affect body composition, sleep, cardiovascular and metabolic health, bone health and how we feel day to day.

That makes this an important stage to reassess our foundations.

Not because every ache, tired day or change in weight means "inflammation".

It doesn't.

And not because omega-3, fibre or any other nutrient is a treatment for perimenopause.

But because this transition can be a powerful reminder that our health needs are changing.

### Perimenopause isn't simply something to get through.

It can be a prompt to invest in the decades ahead.

Strength.

Movement.

Nutrition.

Sleep.

Heart health.

Bone health.

Gut health.

Healthy body composition.

And appropriate preventive healthcare.

The same foundations that support healthy ageing more broadly.

## Visceral fat matters

One piece of the inflammation conversation that deserves more attention is **where we store body fat**.

Body fat isn't simply an energy-storage system.

Adipose tissue is biologically active.

In particular, excess **visceral fat**, the fat stored around organs within the abdominal cavity, is associated with metabolic dysfunction and increased production of inflammatory signalling molecules.

This becomes especially relevant during midlife because body composition can change even when the number on the scales doesn't change dramatically.

For women, hormonal changes through menopause can also influence fat distribution.

That's another reason I prefer thinking about health beyond weight alone.

The goal isn't simply:

*"Be smaller."*

It's:

### Build a metabolically healthier, stronger and more capable body.

## Build muscle, not just weight-loss goals

Muscle deserves a much bigger place in the healthy-ageing conversation.

After 40, I would much rather see someone thinking:

*"How can I become stronger?"*

than spending the next 20 years repeatedly trying to make the scales smaller.

Resistance exercise helps us maintain muscle and physical function as we age.

And physical activity more broadly is associated with numerous benefits for metabolic and cardiovascular health.

So:

Lift weights.

Use resistance bands.

Do bodyweight exercises.

Walk.

Swim.

Cycle.

Garden.

Take the stairs.

Move in ways you enjoy.

You don't have to become an athlete.

### Give your body a reason to remain capable.

## Food patterns matter more than "anti-inflammatory" superfoods

Search for anti-inflammatory foods online and you'll find endless lists.

Turmeric.

Berries.

Green tea.

Olive oil.

Salmon.

Ginger.

Walnuts.

Broccoli.

Many of these foods are nutritious.

But healthy ageing isn't going to be determined by whether you remembered to put turmeric in your smoothie this morning.

The bigger picture matters more.

A healthy dietary pattern tends to include plenty of:

Vegetables.

Fruit.

Legumes.

Wholegrains.

Nuts.

Seeds.

Fish.

Healthy fats.

And minimally processed foods.

Rather than trying to identify one food that will "switch off inflammation", build a way of eating that consistently provides the nutrients your body needs.

### Patterns beat superfoods.

## Eat more plants

One of the simplest ways to improve the overall quality of your diet is to make plants more prominent.

Not because everyone needs to become vegetarian.

Because plant foods bring something incredibly valuable to the table:

**Fibre.**

They also provide vitamins, minerals and a huge variety of naturally occurring plant compounds.

Think colour.

Leafy greens.

Tomatoes.

Capsicum.

Berries.

Citrus.

Beans.

Lentils.

Oats.

Nuts.

Seeds.

Herbs.

Different plants.

Different fibres.

Different nutrients.

Your plate doesn't need to look perfect.

It just needs to become a little more diverse, a little more often.

## Your gut belongs in this conversation too

The gut and immune system interact extensively, and the gut microbiome is increasingly being studied as part of the broader inflammation and metabolic-health picture.

Again, this doesn't mean:

*"Fix your gut and you'll eliminate inflammation."*

Human biology isn't that simple.

But it does give us another reason to care about our gut-health foundations.

Fibre.

Plant diversity.

Resistant starch.

Hydration.

Movement.

Sleep.

And a varied diet.

These aren't trendy detox strategies.

They're ordinary habits.

And ordinary habits are exactly what healthy ageing is built on.

## Omega-3 deserves a place too

Omega-3 fatty acids are another important part of the conversation.

EPA and DHA are long-chain marine omega-3 fatty acids that become incorporated into cell membranes and participate in pathways involved in inflammatory signalling and resolution.

This is one reason fatty-acid balance interests me so much.

We're not simply taking a supplement and hoping something happens.

We can actually look at the fatty-acid profile in the body.

Through the [**BalanceTest**](https://www.thrivebeyond40.au/balance-program), we can measure 11 fatty acids and several markers, including the Omega-6:3 Balance and Omega-3 Index.

That gives us a personalised starting point.

### Test. Understand. Support. Retest.

For me, that's far more useful than simply telling everyone to take the same fish-oil capsule.

## Omega-6 isn't the villain

This deserves repeating.

Omega-6 fatty acids aren't inherently "bad".

We need omega-6 fatty acids as well as omega-3 fatty acids.

The more interesting question is the **overall fatty-acid balance**.

Modern eating patterns can provide substantial amounts of omega-6 while intake of marine EPA and DHA may be relatively low.

The BalanceTest gives us a way to look at that relationship rather than making assumptions based on what we think we eat.

And importantly:

### Your fatty-acid profile can change.

Nutrition isn't necessarily fixed.

That's what makes measuring, supporting and retesting so useful.

## Sleep is not optional maintenance

You can eat beautifully and exercise regularly, but if you're chronically sleeping poorly, you're missing an important part of the health picture.

Sleep supports numerous aspects of physical and mental health, and disrupted or insufficient sleep is associated with changes in metabolic and inflammatory processes.

And after 40, sleep can become more complicated.

Work.

Children.

Caring responsibilities.

Stress.

Perimenopause.

Night sweats.

Screens.

Alcohol.

Life.

All of it can interfere.

We can't always create eight uninterrupted hours of perfect sleep.

But we can stop treating sleep as wasted time.

### Recovery is part of the work.

## Stress matters, but don't make stress another thing to stress about

Chronic psychological stress can influence many systems within the body.

But telling a busy person to "just reduce stress" isn't particularly helpful.

Sometimes life is stressful.

You can't meditate away a difficult job, caring responsibilities or everything happening in your family.

So think about **recovery opportunities** instead.

Walk outside.

Exercise.

See friends.

Spend time in nature.

Put your phone down.

Protect sleep.

Take breaks.

Laugh.

Do something that has absolutely nothing to do with optimising your health.

Healthy ageing has to fit inside a real life.

## Smoking remains one of the big ones

Wellness culture loves complicated interventions.

But some of the most meaningful health decisions aren't glamorous.

Smoking promotes oxidative stress and inflammatory processes and remains one of the major modifiable risk factors for poor long-term health.

If you smoke, getting appropriate support to quit is likely to matter far more than finding the perfect anti-inflammatory supplement stack.

That's an important perspective.

### Get the big foundations right before obsessing over the tiny ones.

## What about alcohol?

Alcohol often gets a health halo around certain drinks, particularly red wine.

I wouldn't rely on alcohol as a health strategy.

If you drink, be thoughtful about how much and how often.

Alcohol can affect sleep, energy intake, blood pressure and other aspects of health.

And as we get older, many people notice they simply don't recover from it the way they once did.

You don't have to live a joyless life.

But it is worth being intentional.

## Can you test for inflammation?

There are blood markers associated with inflammation, including **C-reactive protein (CRP)**, which healthcare professionals may use in appropriate clinical contexts.

But this isn't something I would recommend interpreting alone based on a wellness article.

Inflammatory markers can be influenced by infection, injury, medical conditions and other factors.

If you're concerned about inflammation or your broader health risk, speak with your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional.

That is very different from assuming:

*"I'm tired and bloated, therefore I have silent inflammation."*

### Symptoms deserve context.

And sometimes they deserve proper investigation.

## Be wary of "inflammation" becoming an explanation for everything

This is important.

Online wellness content can make inflammation sound like the hidden cause of almost every problem imaginable.

Weight gain?

Inflammation.

Fatigue?

Inflammation.

Brain fog?

Inflammation.

Poor skin?

Inflammation.

Aches?

Inflammation.

But these experiences can have many possible causes.

Some are lifestyle related.

Some are hormonal.

Some are nutritional.

Some are medical.

And some are simply part of having a busy human body.

Using "inflammation" as a catch-all explanation can actually stop us asking better questions.

### Understand first.

That's one of the most important principles behind Thrive Beyond 40.

## You don't need an "anti-inflammatory lifestyle"

I actually prefer not to think of it that way.

It makes health sound like another battle.

Fight inflammation.

Fight ageing.

Fight fat.

Fight hormones.

Fight your body.

What if instead we focused on **supporting the conditions associated with better health?**

Move regularly.

Build muscle.

Eat mostly nutritious food.

Eat plants.

Get enough fibre.

Include omega-3-rich foods.

Don't smoke.

Be thoughtful about alcohol.

Protect sleep.

Maintain relationships.

Attend appropriate health checks.

Understand your own health where useful.

And keep doing those things over time.

That sounds far less dramatic.

### But that's exactly the point.

Healthy ageing doesn't need to be dramatic.

## Don't chase hacks. Build foundations.

There will always be another longevity trend.

Another supplement.

Another wearable.

Another detox.

Another protocol.

Another influencer telling you the one thing you're missing.

Some innovations will prove useful.

Others won't.

But none of them make the foundations obsolete.

And that's where I think the real opportunity after 40 lies.

Not in becoming obsessed with inflammation.

In becoming more intentional about health.

Move.

Strengthen.

Nourish.

Sleep.

Understand.

Connect.

Then use targeted nutrition and personalised information where they genuinely add value.

## Think long term

The choices we make today don't guarantee our future.

Genetics matter.

Environment matters.

Access to healthcare matters.

And illness can occur despite someone doing everything "right".

Healthy ageing should never become a moral judgement.

It's about working with what we can influence.

And giving ourselves a stronger foundation for the years ahead.

Not because we're frightened of getting older.

Because we want those years.

We want the travel.

The dinners.

The adventures.

The family moments.

The independence.

The energy to participate.

The ability to say yes.

### Health is the foundation. Life is the point.

So don't spend your healthy years terrified of "silent inflammation".

Use the science as motivation to care for yourself.

Build strength.

Eat well.

Support your gut.

Understand your fatty-acid balance.

Protect your sleep.

Stay connected.

And keep living.

**Build the foundations now that support the life you want later.**

**Age Well. Live Well.**
