Omega-3 After 40: What You Need to Know

Why does omega-3 matter?

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats that have important roles throughout the body.

Two you'll hear about frequently are EPA and DHA, predominantly associated with marine sources.

DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function, while EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function.

But the Thrive Beyond 40 conversation isn't simply:

“Should everyone take fish oil?”

We're more interested in:

“Do you know your starting point?”

Food comes first

Good dietary sources of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids include oily fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel and herring.

A healthy dietary pattern should always form the foundation of good nutrition.

But individual diets differ enormously.

Someone eating oily fish regularly may have a very different fatty-acid profile from someone who rarely eats seafood.

And that's where personalised information becomes interesting.

Omega-3 versus omega-6

Omega-6 fatty acids aren't “bad”.

Both omega-6 and omega-3 fats have important physiological roles.

The more useful conversation is about overall fatty-acid status and dietary patterns, rather than trying to label one family of fats good and the other bad.

This is also why simplistic claims about an ideal omega-6:omega-3 ratio deserve caution. Looking at the wider nutritional picture is more useful than reducing health to one number.

Why think about it after 40?

Because healthy ageing is about foundations.

As we begin thinking more seriously about our heart, brain, mobility, recovery and long-term health, nutrition becomes part of a much broader preventative-health strategy.

That strategy also includes:

movement + strength + sleep + healthy weight + social connection + appropriate healthcare + good nutrition.

WHO's healthy-ageing framework similarly emphasises maintaining functional ability rather than merely the absence of disease.

Test, don't simply guess

The Thrive Beyond 40 Balance Program starts with an at-home fatty acid test.
You establish your starting point, begin your nutritional routine and then retest after approximately 120 days.

That changes the conversation from:

“I think this is helping.”

to:

“What changed?”

The bigger picture

Omega-3 isn't a longevity shortcut.

But understanding your nutrition can form one part of a thoughtful approach to healthy ageing.

And that's the philosophy behind Thrive Beyond 40:

Understand more. Make informed choices. Measure where appropriate. Keep living well.
